3. Oriya Teen age does Scientific magic. ( News extracted from http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1619724.cms?epaper )
INDIAN scientists are opting for American patents. For the 16-year old young scientist from Orissa, Apurv Mishra, the inventor of the world acclaimed Glabenator, having American patent will give him better mileage than the Indian patent. Glabenator, which costs less than Rs 1,500, is a gadget some what like a simple computer that enables the people having disabled hands, legs and mouth to express their feelings without much movement from their seats.
The Glabenator displays several choices like food, clothing etc. that a patient needs in his day-to-day life. And what the patient has to do is to get attached with two sensor rods on the muscles above his eyebrows . By raising his eyebrows the patient can scroll the different options available on the screen of the Glabenator and by contracting his eyebrows he can select the option. The machine then speaks out in a human voice what the patient wants. The inventor of this ingenuous tool, however, has lost his faith in the Indian market and rares to go for the American patents. I have no other option but to go for American patents. After getting the US patent, I will have the backing of a great economy, Apurv told ET. He looks for sponsors to get the US patient to hone his talents. American patient will ensure him copyright protection and pave the way for handsome amount of sponsorship for his further research work, explains the budding scientist.
Recalling a case with his 19-year old American scientist friend John Moore, Apurv says: John has got sponsorship to the tune of crore of rupees to develop his tiny spy aeroplane . On the contrary, I have got nothing of that sort to make my invention commercially viable. Besides, he looks to the American market not only for selling his product but also for importing components. The components required for the Glabenator are not manufactured in India. They have to be imported to develop the machine . It's , hence, better to take the American patent and manufacture it in the USA which will be quite cost-effective , contends Apurv. His family, however, is feeling the pinch to make arrangements for the US patent. It is very important to patent it in America, which will require at least Rs 6 lakh, says Apurv's father Anup Kumar Mishra, an executive engineer in the Rural and Works department of Orissa government.
Regarding the further utility of Glabenator, Apurv says, It can also provide another limb to those healthy persons whose hands and legs are engaged with different activities . Explaining further he says, In case of doctors, pilots and shooters , this machine will help them clinch a long deal. These professionals can convey their messages through this gadget with out using their hands and mouth while engaged in their activities. He has bagged the third prize for this project in the engineering category at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in USA. ISEF is considered to be the world's largest pre-college scientific research-based competition which draws 1,500 participants across the globe from 47 member countries. Noble laureates, top scientists and technocrats adjudge the participants. He has also been awarded by the US Army for this unique machine. Asked what had prodded him to take up this project, Apurv says, The traumatic experience that I got when my grand father was in a hospital bed five years ago suffering from paralysis and brain hemorrhage and unable to share his views to others, ignited within me a fire to develop such a machine.

2. Why Orissa was backward for 50 years ? ( lines from Siba Ram Baral )
Instead of being the richest state in terms of mineral deposits, enormous fertile farming land, water abundance, huge man power, vast international coast line, centuries old rich cultural heritage, surplus underground coal and petroleum deposit, Orissa could not be properly utilized for years together. Out of sixty years of independence merely ten years were adequately governed instate and intellectually represented at centre. For the rest fifty years our economy was in bedridden, unconscious, as if in “coma”. Fault can be credited to the lack of proper governance and inadequate & insufficient planning.
Only during the tenures of a great technocrat and industrial architect Sir Biju Pattanaik and his son Sri Naveen Pattanaik as chief ministers, that the state has received & is receiving a royal treatment. Hats of to the two most handsome chief ministers of Orissa, the father son duo. Father gifted Orissa a steel plant at Rourkela ( benefiting 10 lakh people and livelihood), Paradeep Phosphate limited - PPL, ALCO, HAL, REC, Nandankanan and many more. On the other hand the son gifted Orissa with 1,37,00,000 crores of foreign investment, 17 steel plants, 4 sea ports ( Dhamara, Gopalpur, Kirtania, New Paradeep ) and so many in line.
If we look back to find out why the same couldn’t happen during other governments, probably here goes some of the facts and figures. Broadly visualizing the scenario, Orissa was treated like a step son of central government because of the insufficient governance at the state and ignorant MPs representing us at the centre, We lost 50 golden years. Orissa is now crowned as the third richest state of investment in India, the most favorite destination of industrialists, Excellent at progress report and thus a front runner among smart states. This couldn’t happen for the rest 50 years, else Orissa could have been better than with Germany or Japan. The sharp edge injuries of political negligence, improper planning and lack of intelligent MPs at centre has certainly manhandled Orissa for 50 years. Looking at the facts of impact at a glance :
ü Extreme negligence by South Eastern Railways paralyzed Orissa and revenue was looted from Orissa by other states.
ü Ever seen the net like woven rail network in UP, Bihar and West Bengal. And in Orissa there is only two links ( Howrah - Bombay and Howrah - Madras ), that too non-electrocuted for decades.
ü Western Orissa was kept like an Orphan for years. Never ever been taken care off by any Govt. The serious blunder which earlier governments have done may still take time for the recent govt. to compensate.
ü Orissa Govt. was loosing 3600 crores per year of revenue to the hands of West Bengal Govt. due to mineral ore transportation via Haldia Port. Ores and minerals were looted from Orissa thru following five feeder rail links to Haldia port thru howrah - Bombay main line. These would have been the major vital revenue generating rail links for govt. of Orissa. Haldia port trust was doing major business with goods and ores from Orisa and our Govt. were sitting ducks. The five feeder links looting Orissa were
1. Rajakharasuan - Barbil rail link
2. Bandhamunda - Raxi rail link
3. Tata - Badam pahada rail link
4. Rajakharasuan - Bansapani rail link
5. Tata - Goru mahisani rail link
Imagine these 5 railway link lines were like 5 fingers of a hand that was put inside Orissa’s pot and stealing sweets for years. These railway links were doing the same, looting our ores and minerals to a port in another state thus our state loosing export duties and customs worth of 3600 crores per year. Our Governments were sitting like ducks.
ü MP Sri. Anant Nayak was the first person to raise an alarm on this issue in Parliament. In 1973 Sir Biju Pattanaik planned to rail link Bansapani with Jakhapura to reach Paradeep Port. During 1993-94 Railway minister Kanhu Charan Lenka executed the project and it got completed with the catalytic efforts of Sri. Naveen Pattanaik with a green signal from Railway minister Sri. Lalu Prasad Yadav ( Of course with another holy intension of connecting Bihar with Puri dham in a shortest possible rail link) followed by extension of several trains to Puri. Thus our main objective was partially achieved. Other potential revenue generating rail links like Bimalagarh - Talcher, Keonjhar - Badam Pahar, Keonjhar - Barsuan is still to be constructed and prioritized.
ü In Howrah - Madras coast line Vijayanagaram - Kharagpur section that covers whole of Orissa was deliberately ignored till 1993. All trains have to run on diesel engines in this section inside Orissa and rest part of eastern railway was electrocuted. This was like an insult to Orissa. In 1993 then railway minister Sri. Kanhu charan Lenka under guidance and supervision of his majesty Sir. Biju Pattanaik planned and started Electric - traction work and completed the same in 2005.
ü Mines were leased not to Industries, rather to relatives and cousins of ministers with complete leverage over tax and royalty. thus our state loosing a huge amount of revenue from mining.
ü Paradeep Port was intentionally not connected to any of the mines or Industries in Orissa, to ensure Orissa govt. loose the custom export duties. Recently it got connected to Howrah - Madras main line ( after 30 years of the port been built )
ü Internal rail links were neither connecting major cities of Orissa to each other nor to our only port Paradeep.
ü Major city railway station were maintained like “C” grade stations due to lack of funding. Bhubaneswar being the capitol of Orissa, was having only 3 medium sized platforms, underdeveloped comparative to any rail junctions in AP or WB.
ü Our MPs were neither sincere nor regular to Parliament. If few of them went to parliament they were sitting at far corners and sleeping for times. Back home they were kept ignorant of all these and were even in some cases told by party state head office not to raise such issues in Parliament. Even some MPs were unable to read and analyze the railway time table and map.
ü Due to lack of proper rail line network inside Orissa, each day around 20 to 25 thousand heavy vehicles were running thru the state. Result was high risk to citizens and terrible condition of highways.
ü Jagannath Dham, puri one of the most popular hub of world cultural heritage was not properly connected with other parts of India with rail and road lines. 20 pairs of trains run to puri on a daily basis, but surprisingly on a single line. Puri railway station lacks sufficient platforms, passenger amenities and even a central terminal facility. On the contrary Tirupati railway station is well connected to Chennai, Gudur, Hyderabad, Bangalore. As like Tirupati, Puttaparthy & Madurai, Puri neither has a helipad nor airport. Thanks to Naveen Pattanaik government at least that due to his repeated efforts POSCO is going to construct Puri - Konark - Paradeep rail line for 100 kilometer.
ü Places of tourist importance like Udayagiri, Ratnagiri, Lalitagiri and thousands others were neglected to the core. Should have been procured like tourist hubs with well connected road and rail links, entangled with tourist resorts, amenities and security provisions. Rather these places were kept abundant and thus lost their heritage.
ü Talking about education and IT, Orissa was having a mere three Govt. engineering colleges only out of which only REC was a bit well at infrastructure and standard at education and good at placements. This reasoned to absence of Oriya engineers in IT world. Thanks at least to the recent government for liberalizing technical and professional education which resulted in formation of private colleges like KIIT, NIST, RIT and many more. The result is amazing
1. Now in every software industries 10 to 15 percent are Oriyans.
2. Every tenth person coming out with a smile from Visa consulate is an Oriya.
3. Every 20th sale of a flight ticket for inland or to abroad journey is by an Oriyan.
4. Huge inflow of foreign currency streams in side Orissa.
5. Out side Orissa, every 50th owner of a flat in a pos apartment is an Oriya.
So on so forth ……Thanks to the recent liberalization policy of recent government. IT companies can also be established in Orissa as the state possesses all the eligible criterion for nurturing an IT hub. Govt. Representatives and experts should be sent across to other IT cities of India like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, Noida to learn IT governance and management.
Wish if Orissa government can also put an attention over the following points.
1. While preparing for any project plans Orissa govt. should consult all researchers in the relevant line, Experts, Retired chief engineers, directors of major engineering colleges, bureaucrats, Eminent personalities like Dr. Radhanath Rath.
2. Central representatives for the state shouldn’t be chosen on the scales of political influence, rather should be chosen on the merits of relevant expertise and technical proficiency. Technocrats, bravos of different communities. They should also be well fed by state experts in the same disciplines.
3. All govt. ministers and high ranked employees should have proper Email Ids and should be instantly accessible to Emails.
With a wish for all the best of the endeavors in the lines with progress and development, Jai Jagannath …….

2. How can Jagannath culture retain it’s fame ? ( Part – 2 )
In continuation to our earlier mail : How can Jagannath culture retain it’s fame ? ( Part – 1 )
In continuation to our earlier mail, let’s find out how Jagannath culture can retain it’s loosing fame. Broadly speaking about Hinduism, we don’t have enough precautionary measures to protect our own religion. Hindu intellectuals have never approached tribal people before missionaries could and thus religion conversions are more alarming than naxalism and terrorism.
· Lord Jagannath is known for being too much open towards his devotees, this reflects in his temple too. It has four broad and wide doors to accommodate and ease huge public and smooth rush. Thus people get open space and hurdle less entry to the temple and plenty of room & time at GOD’s front. Our GOD never believes in keeping his dignity among his devotees. That’s the reason he is sometimes referred as kalia bhai, jaga bhai, even it’s quite common where in people call him with name ( without respect ). Still he loves all and misses all so much that he never blinks his eye and once a year he comes out to public, touches every one, dancing, sprinting and hooking like a caterpillar to enjoy “Car Festival”. This easy access may be reducing the curiosity of devotees towards him.
It’s a proven theory that the reverse can tremendously increase the curiosity of devotees for the GOD and thus make the GOD and his culture famous. At a well known temple located in south India, it is tactically arranged to hassle the devotees, make them wait for a minimum of four hours for darshanam, cage the devotees in cells for hours together and then let them crawl thru a narrow, suffocating, heavily grilled, ill equipped for any medical emergency, lack of evacuation passage, asphyxiating path to have a eyeshot of GOD. It is even made enough caution not to let the devotee sneak the GOD for more than a fraction of second.
Probably in case of Jagannath temple culture we can’t follow such humiliating concepts. Let’s see some other solutions.
· There is another similar way in which Jagannath culture can be famous. A concept called “Seva dal” consisting of thousands of freely employed devotees should be employed for maintenance of the temple, all relevant spiritual structures, Ashrams, Institutions, hospitals, and even the whole city. “Seva Dal” concept should be so intelligently planned that devotees from around the country will be self motivated, driven and thong the venue and continue with there service at scheduled slots in a state wise sequence in a year. This concept also is quite famous some where in south India for the dynasty of a famous holy man “the living GOD”. This will not only make our Jagannath culture famous, but also inflow a huge dose of foreign currency syrup.
· If we ask a tribal who got converted to another religion about the incident how he got his religion converted, surprisingly we will come to know that first of all they had been approached by few helping hands. Then their livelihood and soul it self was taken over by delicate gifts and money. Even there are live examples where in tribals are misguided and wrongly concreted about Hindu GODs as anti social elements and harmful enemies of mankind, hindu rituals are the hardest ones to follow. Thus moulding them to acquire their suitable religion at once. Does such things we can ever do to make our culture famous. Certainly never.
2. Communication Media ( Print media, TV network and Internet )
Can we partially engage our communication medias to spread awareness and curiosity about Jagannath Culture. Of course such strategy also should be cleverly woven. Not to surprise, we are not going to be the first ones to do such things.
· Ever noticed on walls, polls and even inside railway compartments, posters mentioning “xxxxx Coming”, one who is called as the only savior in their religion. This not only brain washes a common man, but also alerts him to stick to the right track.
· TV channels are sponsored in lump to broadcast spiritualism with stress relaxing yogas, satsangs, pranayams along with something dramatized like devotees asking predefined questions to some one the “Only living GOD” or “GOD’s own messenger. This concept of mixing spiritualism with religion also makes them not only draw millions together in inland & abroad but also coagulates a huge amount of money free from tax and custom duty.
· Another good concept we can follow is to make yahoo groups and city specific small units of people who can be meeting every week end at places and arrange bhajan kirtans. This looks quite simple, descent and good way of spreading awareness about Jagannath culture.
· I am sure most of us would have intercepted a peculiar quote that spam inboxes often is a piece of snap of some GOD or a piece of mantra along with the following lines.
“* Send This to 7 People within the next 5 minutes and your wish will come true Somewhere, somehow. Do not keep this message. The mantra must leave your hands within 1 hours. You will get very pleasant surprise.
* This is true, even if you are not superstitious. FORWARD THIS MANTRA E-MAIL TO AT LEAST 5 PEOPLE AND YOUR LIFE Will IMPROVE.
* 0-4 people: Your life will improve slightly.
* 5-9 people: Your life will improve to your liking.
* 9-14 people: You will have at least 5 surprises in the next 3 weeks.
* 15 people and above: Your life will improve drastically and everything you ever dreamed of will begin to take shape.
If you don’t send this then you will suffer from ……….. bla ….. bla ……. Bla ……”
There is a famous expansion in Oriya “For the sake of mother swallow the oxa”. In oriya “ Maa rana dhinki gill”
3. People ( Common man ) :
We all know Jagannath culture is not something confined to only Oriya, it becomes duty of all of us to cultivate self awareness of our own rituals and culture. There are hundreds of eye opening extreme examples where in
· A non hindu builds a Jagannath temple at a tribal village in Kalahandi
· A professor couple builds a Jagannath temple in USA and celebrates “Rath Yatra” too.
· Few people in a remote African country Nigeria, built Jagannath temple & celebrating Rath yatra and even maintain a seva trust too. Amazing, isn’t it ?
· In Singapore few oriya brothers have their own temple and celebrates all rituals with the best of their efforts. Hats off to them.
And hundreds of such examples are either un acknowledged or lie un noticed. As a common man what we can do is ……….
· Chant and sing lord’s name and bhajans in a daily basis at least for around five minutes.
· Before sleeping at night and after awaking in the morning just can close our eyes and say “Jai Jagannath”.
· Visit Jagannath temple at our vicinity at least once a week.
· Every time we visit the temple, we can invite or escort at least one more new friend.
· contribute at least 1% of our monthly net salary. Believe me this will bring in a huge change in Lord’s life style.
· Start the day’s work by taking his name once.
· Have a tiny sticker of him at front of our vehicle. He has proven excellence as a shield against road mishaps.
· Have a mp3 cut piece or polygonal sound track of his bhajan as ring tone or dial tone in our cell.
· Have a small snap of him in our purse. Lord Jagannath is the husband of Laxmi maa. Let them be together.

2. How can Jagannath culture retain it’s fame ? ( Part – 1 )
My sincere apologies for communicating on such a curious topic, but it’s quite high time Oriya people should realize the importance of maintaining the fame of our own highest cultural icon “Lord Jagannath”.
In a rapid changing modern society where youth are more leaning towards western culture and are completely ignorant of our own age old tradition, it’s an easy guess how our next generations will be, if it goes in this way. It’s a quite common observation that except quite a few most of the youths either doesn’t have time for GOD or no interest for culturospiritualism.
Now in such scenario the primary goal appears to be “how to boost curiosity among young generation for Jagannath culture”. If seen from a bird’s eye view Three entities can influence these attributes.
1. Authorities responsible for campaigning Jagannath culture ( Temple trust administration, Sevayats and Government.
How : Remember in the today’s mechanized world a “temple is an Industry and devotees are customers”. Several points can be followed to ensure customer satisfaction in a temple industry.
· Temple authorities and administration should take utmost care for customers.
· Pujaris, sevayats and priests should never and never use slang language towards devotees and should refrain from cheating the tourists. Authorities should take sensitive precautions to prevent all such stuff.
· All “darshans” and “bhoga offering” activity’s should be capped with a constant amount.
· Adequate arrangements should be taken to maintain optimized cleanliness & hygiene in the premises.
· State Govt. and east coast railway should liberalize, railway policies, multiply train numbers, provide Puri station with terminus facility and provide concessions over pilgrimage fares.
· Roads leading to Puri to be broadened and alternated with bypasses, should be 8 lane to accommodate heavy rush, strict police vigil to be imposed
· Puri deserves a helipad and a small scale at least 1 KM. runway air port.
Friends I know this topic will exploit many of us to write back couple of more points. I will be coagulating all the points, reframe a patient mail and send it to some higher authorities in Orissa assembly, Ministerial personals and Jagannath Temple Administration.
Again following to this mail, with our next week’s news letter we will be providing some inputs on how Communication Media ( Print media, TV network and Internet ) and Individual citizen can add value to retain the cultural fame of Lord Jagannath.

Friday the 9th of March afternoon was tunefully celebrated as the grand finale of Oriya Film Festival at Bangalore. The event started with another renowned award winning and internationally nominated Oriya movie "Puja Pain Phulatie".
