5. Certificate Management. ( Composed by Siba Ram Baral )

Career certificates and documents are precious and serves as the gate way ticket to all our career endeavors. This are the acknowledgement receipts of all our labor and struggle that we have done from the very beginning of our childhood till date. These piece of papers holds importance of a promissory note and assurance of our level of education, learnings and training history. Statistics says that an average student of descent educational career, done with masters with an appreciable career use to have around 40 to 45 pieces of marks cards and certificates. If we count all our offer letters, appointment letters, appraisal letters, hike letters, appreciation letters and even experience certificates and relieving letters then per company these only counts to be 20 in piece. Just imagine the amount of documents that we accumulate as mile stones of our career.

A certificate can go spoiled or lost if not handled carefully or even kept some where and ignored for days. At last these are mere piece of papers only. So here comes a resolution on this. “Certificate Management” tells us how ideally do we handle our certificates and how prepared are we for situations where in a certificate is lost or spoiled.

Risks to certificates :
Certificates are usually kept in suitcases or cupboards where they are prone to natural hazards like moisture, chemical reaction of print ink with air and even animal hazards like insects, cockroaches and rats. Have you ever wondered some times certificates look blur after a prolong period of time. Letters look pale, diminished and logos and images look dull. It’s a common observation. Some times even certificates go fungi with moisture, with foam kind of layer on top, some times it becomes brittle and can dust off, goes tore or tampered during transportation or circulations. Even loosing a piece of certificate with disposable paper wastes and news papers is also not so uncommon. If kids around then they find crazy to tamper and rough use the certificates. So how safe are our tickets of future.

Ways to preserve certificates :

1. All career certificates must be laminated, kept in polythene A4 size envelopes with front side facing up and then to be tied in a box type folder.
2. Carry along only the latest education certificates in Original while moving from places to places and all previous ones must be kept at permanent address residence.
3. Three sets of Xerox should be made for each career certificates and must be attested and kept at three locations.
4. All certificates can be scanned and made CD out of the image files with proper nomenclature and hierarchical arrangement.
5. Import certificate’s scanned image files can be kept in personal files over internet ( Like in Yahoo briefcase or gmail folders )
6. All certificates bears an unique number which is different from the roll number or registration number. These numbers should be noted down, kept in a note pad file and the note pad file can be forwarded to all personal Ids as attachments of mails.
7. We must ensure that we know all the points of contacts to act immediately in case of loss of certificates. Contacts of Registrars of Universities, Marks card sections of boards and even examination sections of colleges where in we have studied.
8. Certificate image CDs should be duplicated with 2 to 3 copies and kept at 3 different locations.
9. Professional Certificates can be kept in separate folders and as sets so that in case of a switch of a job, these can be retrieved instantly.
10. Copies of Xeroxes of professional certificates can be kept at locations of easy traceability.
11. In case of misplacing or loss of professional certificates we should be able to inform the respective companies and get duplicate copies of the certificates on demand.

So how safe are your certificates now. Once if we read this complete mail in front of our certificates they will get a ray of hope at least, they will feel consolidated and this will blow life in them.

2. An IIT to save the self esteem of Orissa. ( News Source : Professor Chitta Baral, University of Ar izoana, USA )

An IIT for Orissa is not a demand for luxury any more, it's the only solution to save our self esteem. Let's all get united and unleash the next phase of the IIT campaign. Based on various news reports following is the current situation -in a nutshell-with respect to getting an IIT in Orissa.
1. The media is regularly covering the issue and the general people in streets have become aware of the issue of IIT as well as the central neglect/injustice/discrimination against Orissa.
http://iitorissa.org http://orissawatch.org
2. The Orissa MPs, politicians, and the CM are all frequently mentioning the IIT issue as well as the central neglect/injustice/discrimination against Orissa.
http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/naveen-slams-centre-for-ignoring-orissa.html http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/bjd-calls-for-economic-blockade-against.html http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/arjun-confused-naveen-on-iit-issue.html
3. The people in Orissa have become aware of the importance of these issues and the minister Chandrasekhar Sahu has discussed it with the PM and the PM seems to be suggesting that he will announce some institutes in a few months when he comes to Orissa. http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/cong-counters-naveens-charges-point-by.html http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/lalit-patnaiks-report-on-delhi-visit-by.html http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/chandrasekhar-sahu-meets-pm-on-iit.html
With that background we can do the following:
1. Write/call/email to Orissa MPs and convery to them that they should meet the PM and make a case for an IIT (and more) to him.
http://iits.11thplan.googlepages.com/contact2
2. Write/call/email the Orissa CM and convey to them that he should meet the PM and make a case for an IIT (and more) to him. http://iits.11thplan.googlepages.com/contact2
3. Write/call/email Congress leaders from Orissa, especially minister Chandrasekhar Sahu and convey to him that we are not fools; a 1000-4000 crore IIT can not be substituted by 2-3 small 2-3 crore type institutes or institutes (like IIIT made via PPP, or central university type funding to one university in each state) that all states will be getting anyway. Note each state is supposed to get a IIIT and one university in each state is supposed to become a central university equivalent. So those don't count. WE NEED AN IIT or AN IIT EQUIVALENT. This message must be conveyed to the PM via Mr. Chandrasekhar Sahu. http://esuvidha.nic.in/orissa/orissadirectory/full_list.asp?page=72&individualname=&rowcount=1 http://rural.nic.in/telephonelist.as
4. Please spread this message to other Oriyans.

3. Tracking a Lost your mobile phone? ( Composed by Preethi )
Here are some steps to follow to recover it. or at least recover from your loss.

You lost your mobile. More than the gadget, you mourn for the invaluable collection of your contacts, the pricey downloaded mp3s and photos that you took and never bothered to upload. At that moment, many feel anger at the theft or misplacing. They curse the world and its evil ways, gain sympathy from friends and are, for a few days, totally helpless. While the executive user may count the number of months before she last synchronized the phone book with her laptop, the college student would probably grin at the prospect of getting the latest `cool' mobile on the shelf. If you don't belong to the latter category, then read this as a guide that you could follow if you lost your mobile.

1. Go for an FIR : If your handset was stolen, or you thought you had a chance to get it back, then register an FIR (First Information Report) at the nearest police station (nearest to where you lost it/it was stolen). An FIR is a written document prepared by the police when they receive information about the commission of a cognizable offence. It sets the process of criminal justice in motion and is the first step to begin investigation. While filing the FIR, the details required are: make and model of the mobile, phone number, description of where you lost it, and who you think could've stolen it. The police, even in towns, are usually sympathetic and helpful, but will offer no guarantee that they can get your mobile back. "For them, the priority is different," is the understated explanation they offer. Read the FIR while it is being filled out by the police, sign it and remember to take a copy of it for later use. Many mobile theft victims have reported that the police officers coax them into reporting that the mobile was `misplaced' and not robbed. This would save them the actual hunt for the `suspect'.

You can also make a complaint to the State Human Rights Commission or the National Human Rights Commission if the police does nothing to enforce the law or does it in a biased and corrupt manner. However, most citizens tend to sigh about the `system' and buy a new mobile instead of `dealing with bureaucracy'. "It's like if you lost your spectacles. Would you bother going to the police and reporting it?" said one mobile user.

2. Deactivation of number : The next step, or probably the first that many could do, is to call your cellular operator's service centre, and inform them to deactivate your number. This is to ensure that the crook or whoever picks up your phone will be unable to use it for their purpose. In post-paid mobile connections, this is more common — the misuse could run up the mobile bill into thousands. Sometimes, it may be better to inform the operator and ask them to check for any surge in phone activity before de-activating. This is on the off-hand chance that an honest person would find your mobile and try to call any of your contacts. Usually such people call the person you called last and inform them that your mobile is in their possession.

Once your mobile number is deactivated, ensure that people whom you expect to call you at that number are informed of its loss. For reactivation, a fee of Rs 200 (or Rs 250, depending on your carrier) is charged. It takes between 3-4 days to activate the new SIM card, since they want to confirm that you are actually the owner of the mobile phone that is reported lost. So, they ensure that the details of birth date, address and all that match with that of the database, before they reactivate it. Pre-paid users may prefer to get another number instead of reactivating the old one, but corporate and most white-collar workers would insist on retaining the same number due to the difficulty of informing their long list of contacts about the change. Some also have an attachment to the number and may want to retain it. For those, the service centre of their cellular operator will offer information on reactivation of the same number. Some request you to bring the FIR to authenticate your identity. But this process is also usually bypassed. If you have registered your mobile at an Internet banking site, then you should inform the bank about the incident. They will disable your mobile banking facility immediately. You can always register the number again.

3. Tracking it down : Operators in India are not yet offering to detect where your mobile is located, for reasons primarily economic in nature. When approached, a popular operator said that they were not allowed by law to trace a mobile. However, cyber law expert Na. Vijayashankar says "It is possible that some mobile service providers are wrongly interpreting privacy laws as requiring protection of IMEI numbers. Not using IMEI/IMSI tracking and blocking is against the concept of Due Diligence, as per ITA-2000." Operators can track down a mobile if the IMEI number is known. The GSM Association hosts a server containing all the IMEI numbers of GSM handsets sold, and divides them into the Black List and White List, the former being the ones the association has been informed of misuse or inactivity. Countries can tap into this database and check with their existing database of call records if such Black listed handsets are in use in their circles. The International Mobile Equipment Identity is a unique 15-digit number to your handset. CDMA phones have an 8-digit Electronic Serial Number. The mobile is registered with the service provider's network at this number, and it can be traced every time you make a phone call from the handset.

Tracking the mobile can be done using information about the tower's location where it was last seen and zeroing in on the handset with its IMEI, which would give them a unique target. The operator can then block the mobile across its GSM network. However, the ability to disable the handset if it uses another SIM card is not yet possible. Australia and a few other European countries have enabled this blocking, by having a centralized database for the country, with all operators joining hands to fight mobile theft. However, in a country as huge as India, a central database of all mobile IMEI numbers, called the equipment identity register, is near to impossible, say industry experts. Some cellular operators offer the service for high-profile businessmen, NRIs and on police order (to track down terrorists and gangsters). The layman, however, will have to wait a while before the service is offered to them. Australia and the UK offer this service for free.

4. The 'Hot spots' : On an average, about 150 mobile phone instruments are either stolen or snatched or lost in the Chennai Metropolitan Police area. Were you aware that in any given year, 2 per cent of wireless phones are reported lost, stolen, or damaged? According to a Spice employee, the operator receives around 500 police complaints a day in Bangalore alone. According to Mumbai's Western and Central Railway police records, of the 669 complaints of mobile thefts registered last year, the highest incidences had taken place in suburban railway stations. Other spots where mobile theft is common are cars, theatres, bus stands, homes and offices.

With people increasingly depending on mobiles as a lifeline, one simple precaution to ensure the thief does not access your critical data is to have password locks wherever possible. Also, all buyers of second-hand mobiles should demand details of previous ownership.

4. Living-in-relations, staying together before marriage. ( composed by : Siba Ram Baral )
Yes, friends…. I am talking about something which is happening at your next door. A common scene around that has triggered an early warning to a possible massive cultural disaster. To start discussing on this let's find out if our history and tradition says something similar.
ACOUSTIC NERVE : "Ghotul", a system followed by tribal people of interior Maharastra and MP in which marriageable boys and girls stay together for a few days in specially constructed thatched huts and select their partners after gaining familiarity and confidence is still in vogue among tribal.

Our constitution says : Staying together before marriage : bigamy a non-cognizable offence.

When I meet youngsters belonging to the middle class, related to my friends or from neighborhood, I find these shy children still blush with the name of love itself. They are trapped in the struggle of resolving career-oriented problems on the one hand and are in a blind race of adopting the western lifestyle. They are keen to adopt card culture and fast food trend, while love is still a romantic dream for them. Trapped in traditional disparities these youngsters seem to shy from physical relationship. But when I go through the personal columns and discussion boards in the magazines, I find most of their talks revolving around issues of premarital physical relation, their physical involvements and their confusions arising thereof. The newspapers are full of such love messages, in the chat room of Internet cafés these youngsters appear to be very bold.

I get perplexed with the projection of this double standard of this new young Indian lot. What is the truth? They might have indulged in the physical relations out of natural curiosity but their Indian cultural norms must also lead to conflict within their minds. These premarital relations give rise to the problem of mental distress. Because our Indian traditions emphasize that physical relation and physical relation should be with only the one you get married. All love affairs are not successful : some are sacrificed due to circumstances and societal pressures while fade with the passage of time. In these cases, if there has been physical involvement, then these Indian youngsters cannot embezzle it, and their traditional views do not allow them to accept it. This remains alive in their life and revives like an ulcer in their personality.

In India , the large percentage of boys and girls belonging to middle class families of small towns are still ignorant of physical relations till they get married. This is also a negative approach. One class of these youngsters wants to be known as progressive, they stay in big cities while enjoying their freedom and independence. These self-dependent young who believe marriage as a burden, are economically independent, they think that they have a clear thought of physical relations, just like a natural desire. For such desires, the girls and boys belonging to this class start staying together under the concept of 'Living-in-relations '. These young persons who don't believe in marriage, in no time, entangle with lot of troubles. These relations do not have any commitments, devotion, and when there is an ego clash with each other, then these relations without any sanctity of society become burden leading to separation and a cause for mental distress.

It has taken some thousand of years for man to evolve from an animal to a civilized human, developing his emotional and societal needs to build relationships for his personal growth and family, how can the act of physical relation sans an emotional security be truly satisfying? Physical relation involves emotional bondage. We see around us married couples really struggle to make their marriage successful because they are committed, while the bond which is without the sanctity of marriage, it is assumed, will definitely be full of problems only.

Finally, these premarital relations may give a short-lived sense of joy through physical relation release or a feeling of independence by rebelling against the traditional values, they do not confer permanency that the institution of marriage does. Premarital physical relations also occur when people cross their marriageable age and are unable to overlook their physical needs. One may argue that for an adult, the physical satisfaction is one's personal affair or an ecstasy arising from the union of two bodies yet the Indian society does not sanctify this argument without the institution of marriage. It is true that this institution, in itself is quite old and needs some change and a considerate attitude. For example the orthodox and tradition bound society must accept love marriages.

At last, these traditions do work and provides security and confidence to children, the traditions, which are inculcated at childhood, parent's awareness and friend's behavior, and these children do not look outside for any prohibited happiness. But extremeness always makes opposite impression, difference among physical relation, keeping them apart becomes a cause of dangerous anxiety. At this stage, the physical relation education, at the right time through the right medium, serves the positive role. With the combination of considerate liberal approach and keeping the traditional values in mind we can restrict such pre-marital physical relations to a certain extent. This requires cooperation of the society, parents, educational institutions, media and even the compatibility of youngsters.

The second issue is the birth of a child arising from premarital physical relation. This is not desired or acceptable even in the tribal society of any part of the world. Even among the animals, before giving birth to their children, both parents bring up the children together, till they become self-dependent. Single motherhood is not only unnatural but suicidal too. Even if the mother is well-versed to rear her children, she cannot provide completeness in the absence of the father. The unmarried mother can't do justice with herself and the child.

With various discussions and debates, these topics will always remain filled with controversies and will be alive forever. Prohibited but lustrous the premarital physical relation may be, it cannot remove the values of the institution of marriage. Though the marriage is an old institution but it has a definite scientific value of stability, physical satisfaction, emotional attachments and feeling of security.

My sincere request to all my friends and youngsters to stay away from such things and better be honest and integrated for some one who waits at some corner of the world to be your partner for next seven lives.

2. A fire wall protection called “Jai Jagannath”
“Jai Jagannath”, a mere combination of twelve simple letters of English and six in oriya, but having a power of a billion newtons more than that of suns surface. Believe me just by pronouncing this name heartily makes a person get empowered with that energy. And that automatically creates a ring of invisible protective layer around the human body. Nothing else can harm or impact the one thru this. This can be defined as a mere drop of ocean of miracles of Lord Jagannath. Try it to believe it.
· On getting up in the morning Just whisper into your own ears ....."Jai Jagannath", and see the magic the whole day.
· While start driving, just close your eyes and say ....."Jai Jagannath", you can feel the presence of a three layered firewall protection around your body.
· Any problem or trouble, just whisper ....."Jai Jagannath", that's it. your trouble will be cleared out by an invisible hand.
· Feeling sick or compromising with health, chant ....."Jai Jagannath", makes the magic.
· Studying or working, outer ....."Jai Jagannath", success at feet.
Condition : you should do this from your own heart and just close your eyes for a second.

Oriya culture in danger due to Western invasion
IOrissa Information and Public Relations Minister Debasis Nayak Saturday called upon the people of the state to secure its culture and tradition from the invasion of western practices but expressed confidence it will survive the foreign onslaught.

In the era of globalisation, tougher days are ahead for the Oriya culture and practices, Nayak said while speaking at the sixth anniversary function of Omkar Sankrutika Parishad, a leading cultural organisation of Jajpur district. We all are accountable to our future generation. One person cannot preserve it. Its our collective responsibility and we have to shoulder the same for the betterment of Oriyas, he added. The minister said every challenge creates opportunity and the people of the state should grab the same. Western culture is moving much faster than ours. But given the conditions prevailing in the world, our glorious culture will survive in the long run, he predicted.

Pratap Kumar Jena, a Kisan Nagar legislator, also hoped that the state would excel in the field of art and culture in the coming days as Oriya artists are performing well in the world arena. Noted lyricist Dillip Jena presided over the function. Secretary of the cultural organisation Ashok Kumar Mohapatra and a host of politicians, bureaucrats, media and television personalities attended the ceremony.

2. Kemp Fort, Bangalore not prototyping Lingaraj Temple
Surprisingly I am talking about the same Kemp Fort Lord Siba Temple at Airport Road Bangalore
Which witnesses more than 60% of any time instant visitors only from Orissa,
Which gets colorful on Monday because of the flowers offered by day long fasting unmarried girls from Orissa.
Where evening rush is a common scene because of office returning smarts and beauties from Orissa.
Where Donation box and entry ticket coupon booklet gets overwhelming response because of the huge donation and frequent visits by Orians.
Where every young hearts that meet, hold each other's hand and look deep into Lord Siba's eyes with hopes and dreams are Oriyans.
But sad to say this temple doesn't have a prototype of our world famous "Lingaraj Temple", Bhubaneswar. Kemp fort show cases prototype replicas of thirteen of Lord Shiva's famous destinations of holy pilgrimages in India. Surrounded by densely populated Oriyans in the neighborhood and even mostly being visited by Oriya People. Now this can be one or more of the following reasons.
A big mistake by the Kemp fort temple trust. Ignorance of Sri. Ravi Melwani on Lingaraj Temple. ( To introduce : He is a well-known business personality and owner of Kemp Fort, who is also a staunch devotee of Shiva, was instrumental in the construction of this idol and temple. This majestic 65 foot open-air idol of Lord Shiva is located on Air Port Road, behind the famous Kemp Fort. Shiva is portrayed in the posture of Padmasan with the replica of the holy Ganga flowing from his topknot. )
Non-responsiveness of each and every Oriya in Bangalore who visit there and still doesn't feel the importance of raising this issue in front of the temple trust.
Even now also it's not that late. Truth is that the money which had been spent by Oriya visitors to the temple either for tickets or donation would have summed up to worth of ten such temples in the heart of Bangalore. I have noticed around 60 percent of the visitors at any time belong to Orissa. Then "Why our GOD is not there ?" Let's all raise a voice on this. My dear friend I request you next time you go to the Kemp fort Siba temple :
In the donation box put a ten rupee note stapled with a small letter to the trustee, requesting him to do the needful for a prototype of Lingaraj temple, Bhubaneswar to reside along with the other miniatures.
And / Or meet the trust administrator or direct to Sri. Ravi Melwani and discuss the religious importance of Lingaraj Temple, Bhubaneswar and request to add the same as a prototype at his temple.
We can even offer him a proposal that if they allow we all non residential Oriyans at Bangalore can contribute and pay for a prototype of Lingaraj temple to be included there. Just he needs to accommodate the same in a geographic sorting order.
We can do this our selves and gift the prototype to him as a surprise on the next "Shivaratri" and then to request him to add the same.
About Lingaraj Temple : The Lingaraj temple at Bhubaneswar dates from the 11th Century A.D. It is one of the grandest and loftiest (147 ft. high) temple in eastern india. The tower of the temple curves gracefully inwards, with its impressive dimensions and appropriate decorative ornamentation, this temple ranks high among the Architectural masterpieces of India. The image of Ganesh, Kartickeya and Parvati in this temple are remarkable for their fine modelling and imposing sites. Teh temple is adorned with freezes of armed procession pagentry, miscellaneous scenes, images of Hindu deities and Gracefull Female figures. Majestic in conception, the Lingaraj temple is a world of its own with 64 secondary temple clustered around the central pine and is known as the temple of orissa.

The Temple is sorrounded by a massive one 520 ft. long and 456 ft. broad. The wall is pierced by three gates on the north, south and east. The gate is guarded by two stone lions and capped by a pyramidal roof. Lingaraj, the God in the temple is represented by a LINGA, a natural black stone, 8 ft, in diametre. Such a representation of Lingaraj is called Swayambhu, a natural Linga.

Orissa: Wonder Kid Budhia Singh from Orissa, ran his way to the Limca Book of Records as the youngest long distance runner in the world.

Now, there is another Wonder Kid, again from Orissa, who is earning recognition for an extraordinary feat. "I will cover even more such distances in future and strengthen my own record," says the enthusiastic Rajesh.

A local martial arts champion, it was during a practice session that Rajesh's coach thought of trying to set a record. Rajesh began with 700 kicks that increased gradually. Says Rajesh's coach, Alok Shah, "If he gets proper support from his parents and the district administration he can create an unbeatable record." Rajesh and his coach are now getting in touch with officials at the Guinness Book of World Records to enter his name as the youngest and fastest kick walker.

IBM Big Blue reveals 5 innovations that will change lives in next 5 years
Unveiled to shape the future, the "IBM Next Five in Five" may sound a distance future yet they are real-life innovations - a list of innovations that have the potential to change the way people work, live and play over the next five years. The list is based on market and societal trends expected to transform our lives, as well as emerging technologies from IBM's Labs around the world that could make these innovations possible.

"Our researchers are focused on the application of technologies in ways that matter to people, business and society," said Dr. Daniel Dias, director of IBM's India Research Laboratory. "Open collaborative research and real-world innovations are going to shape the future." he said. In the next five years, our lives will change through technology innovations in the following ways, says Dr. Dias:

We will be able to access healthcare remotely. Millions of people with chronic health problems such as diabetes, heart, kidney or circulatory problems will be able to have their conditions automatically monitored as they go about their daily lives. Device makers and health care professionals will take a proactive approach to ongoing, remote monitoring of patients, delivered through sensors in the home, worn on the person or in devices and packaging. These advances will also allow patients to better monitor their own health and help clinicians provide the on-going preventive care regardless of a person's location. Hardware and software advances in the field of remote-control healthcare will be a major source of consumer and enterprise innovation by 2012.

Mobile phones will start to read our minds. Advanced "presence" technology will give mobile phones and PDAs the ability to automatically learn about their users' whereabouts and preferences as they commute, work and travel. "Presence" technology - used in instant messaging - already makes it possible to locate and identify a user as soon as the user connects to the network. In five years, all sorts of mobile devices will have the ability to continually learn about and adapt to your preferences and needs. Your phone will know when you're in class or in a meeting and divert automatically to voicemail. Your favorite pizza joint will know when you're on your way home after a late night and ping you with a special-price, take-home meal just for you.

Real-time speech translation will become the norm. The movement towards globalization needs to take into account basic human elements, such as differences in language. For example, IBM speech innovations are already allowing media companies to monitor Chinese and Arabic news broadcasts over the Web in English, travelers using PDAs to translate menus in Japanese, and doctors to communicate with patients in Spanish. Real-time translation technologies and services will be embedded into mobile phones, handheld devices and cars. These services will pervade every part of business and society, eliminating the language barrier in the global economy and social interaction.

There will be a 3-D Internet. The popular online immersive destinations, such as Second Life and the World of Warcraft, will evolve into the 3-D Internet, much like the early work by the likes of Darpa, AOL and Prodigy evolved into the World Wide Web. In this immersive online world, you will walk the aisles of supermarkets, bookstores and DVD shops, where you'll encounter experts you'd rarely find in your local store. The 3-D Internet will enable new kinds of education, remote medicine and consumer experiences, transforming how we interact with our friends, family, doctors, teachers, favorite stores, and more.

New technologies will address areas of environmental importance. Governments and companies are increasingly looking to improve environmental stewardship and working to secure reliable and cost-effective resources like water, energy, etc. Information technology, materials science, and physics will help meet environmental needs. Nanotechnology - the ability to manipulate individual atoms and molecules to form tiny new structures - has already had a major impact on microprocessors, making electronic products like PCs and mobile phones smaller, better and cheaper. In coming years, nanotechnology will likely be used for water filtration. This could advance ecology and conservation, helping to address the growing worldwide shortage of potable water supplies. Other areas where IT, physics, and material science will have a big impact are advanced water modeling and improving solar power systems J o b Update at Nilachakra :

5. Buddha Purnima falls today :

Buddha Purnima is the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar. It is the most important festival of the Buddhists, and is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Although Buddhists regard every full moon as sacred, the moon of the month of Vaisakh (April - May) has special significance because on this day the Buddha was born, attained enlightenment, and attained Nirvana when he died. This strange, three - fold coincidence, gives Buddha Purnima its unique significance.

6. Scientists spot 'second Earth', holds hope for life :

Washington: For the first time astronomers have discovered a planet outside our solar system that is potentially habitable, with Earth-like temperatures, a find researchers described Tuesday as a big step in the search for ''life in the universe.''
The planet is just the right size, might have water in liquid form, and in galactic terms is relatively nearby at 120 trillion miles (193 trillion km) away. But the star it closely orbits, known as a ''red dwarf,'' is much smaller, dimmer and cooler than our sun.

European astronomers have not directly seen the planet, orbiting a red dwarf star called Gliese 581. But measurements of the star suggest that a planet not much larger than the Earth is pulling on it, the researchers say in a letter to the editor of the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. "We have estimated that the mean temperature of this super-Earth lies between 0 and 40 degrees Celsius (32 to 104 degrees F), and water would thus be liquid." ''Liquid water is critical to life as we know it,'' co-author Xavier Delfosse of Grenoble University in France, said in a statement. ''Because of its temperature and relative proximity, this planet will most probably be a very important target of the future space missions dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life. On the treasure map of the Universe, one would be tempted to mark this planet with an X.''

Most of the 200 or so planets that have been spotted outside this solar system have been gas giants like Jupiter. But this one is small. "Its radius should be only 1.5 times the Earth's radius, and models predict that the planet should be either rocky, like our Earth, or covered with oceans," Udry said in a telephone interview. It appears to have a mass five times that of Earth's. The research team includes scientists credited with the first widely accepted discovery of a planet outside our solar system, in 1995. Many teams are looking for planets circling other stars. They are especially looking for those similar to our own, planets that could support life. That means finding water.
