2. An IIT to save the self esteem of Orissa. ( News Source : Professor Chitta Baral, University of Ar izoana, USA )

An IIT for Orissa is not a demand for luxury any more, it's the only solution to save our self esteem. Let's all get united and unleash the next phase of the IIT campaign. Based on various news reports following is the current situation -in a nutshell-with respect to getting an IIT in Orissa.
1. The media is regularly covering the issue and the general people in streets have become aware of the issue of IIT as well as the central neglect/injustice/discrimination against Orissa.
http://iitorissa.org http://orissawatch.org
2. The Orissa MPs, politicians, and the CM are all frequently mentioning the IIT issue as well as the central neglect/injustice/discrimination against Orissa.
http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/naveen-slams-centre-for-ignoring-orissa.html http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/bjd-calls-for-economic-blockade-against.html http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/arjun-confused-naveen-on-iit-issue.html
3. The people in Orissa have become aware of the importance of these issues and the minister Chandrasekhar Sahu has discussed it with the PM and the PM seems to be suggesting that he will announce some institutes in a few months when he comes to Orissa. http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/cong-counters-naveens-charges-point-by.html http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/lalit-patnaiks-report-on-delhi-visit-by.html http://iits-11thplan.blogspot.com/2007/05/chandrasekhar-sahu-meets-pm-on-iit.html
With that background we can do the following:
1. Write/call/email to Orissa MPs and convery to them that they should meet the PM and make a case for an IIT (and more) to him.
http://iits.11thplan.googlepages.com/contact2
2. Write/call/email the Orissa CM and convey to them that he should meet the PM and make a case for an IIT (and more) to him. http://iits.11thplan.googlepages.com/contact2
3. Write/call/email Congress leaders from Orissa, especially minister Chandrasekhar Sahu and convey to him that we are not fools; a 1000-4000 crore IIT can not be substituted by 2-3 small 2-3 crore type institutes or institutes (like IIIT made via PPP, or central university type funding to one university in each state) that all states will be getting anyway. Note each state is supposed to get a IIIT and one university in each state is supposed to become a central university equivalent. So those don't count. WE NEED AN IIT or AN IIT EQUIVALENT. This message must be conveyed to the PM via Mr. Chandrasekhar Sahu. http://esuvidha.nic.in/orissa/orissadirectory/full_list.asp?page=72&individualname=&rowcount=1 http://rural.nic.in/telephonelist.as
4. Please spread this message to other Oriyans.

3. Tracking a Lost your mobile phone? ( Composed by Preethi )
Here are some steps to follow to recover it. or at least recover from your loss.

You lost your mobile. More than the gadget, you mourn for the invaluable collection of your contacts, the pricey downloaded mp3s and photos that you took and never bothered to upload. At that moment, many feel anger at the theft or misplacing. They curse the world and its evil ways, gain sympathy from friends and are, for a few days, totally helpless. While the executive user may count the number of months before she last synchronized the phone book with her laptop, the college student would probably grin at the prospect of getting the latest `cool' mobile on the shelf. If you don't belong to the latter category, then read this as a guide that you could follow if you lost your mobile.

1. Go for an FIR : If your handset was stolen, or you thought you had a chance to get it back, then register an FIR (First Information Report) at the nearest police station (nearest to where you lost it/it was stolen). An FIR is a written document prepared by the police when they receive information about the commission of a cognizable offence. It sets the process of criminal justice in motion and is the first step to begin investigation. While filing the FIR, the details required are: make and model of the mobile, phone number, description of where you lost it, and who you think could've stolen it. The police, even in towns, are usually sympathetic and helpful, but will offer no guarantee that they can get your mobile back. "For them, the priority is different," is the understated explanation they offer. Read the FIR while it is being filled out by the police, sign it and remember to take a copy of it for later use. Many mobile theft victims have reported that the police officers coax them into reporting that the mobile was `misplaced' and not robbed. This would save them the actual hunt for the `suspect'.

You can also make a complaint to the State Human Rights Commission or the National Human Rights Commission if the police does nothing to enforce the law or does it in a biased and corrupt manner. However, most citizens tend to sigh about the `system' and buy a new mobile instead of `dealing with bureaucracy'. "It's like if you lost your spectacles. Would you bother going to the police and reporting it?" said one mobile user.

2. Deactivation of number : The next step, or probably the first that many could do, is to call your cellular operator's service centre, and inform them to deactivate your number. This is to ensure that the crook or whoever picks up your phone will be unable to use it for their purpose. In post-paid mobile connections, this is more common — the misuse could run up the mobile bill into thousands. Sometimes, it may be better to inform the operator and ask them to check for any surge in phone activity before de-activating. This is on the off-hand chance that an honest person would find your mobile and try to call any of your contacts. Usually such people call the person you called last and inform them that your mobile is in their possession.

Once your mobile number is deactivated, ensure that people whom you expect to call you at that number are informed of its loss. For reactivation, a fee of Rs 200 (or Rs 250, depending on your carrier) is charged. It takes between 3-4 days to activate the new SIM card, since they want to confirm that you are actually the owner of the mobile phone that is reported lost. So, they ensure that the details of birth date, address and all that match with that of the database, before they reactivate it. Pre-paid users may prefer to get another number instead of reactivating the old one, but corporate and most white-collar workers would insist on retaining the same number due to the difficulty of informing their long list of contacts about the change. Some also have an attachment to the number and may want to retain it. For those, the service centre of their cellular operator will offer information on reactivation of the same number. Some request you to bring the FIR to authenticate your identity. But this process is also usually bypassed. If you have registered your mobile at an Internet banking site, then you should inform the bank about the incident. They will disable your mobile banking facility immediately. You can always register the number again.

3. Tracking it down : Operators in India are not yet offering to detect where your mobile is located, for reasons primarily economic in nature. When approached, a popular operator said that they were not allowed by law to trace a mobile. However, cyber law expert Na. Vijayashankar says "It is possible that some mobile service providers are wrongly interpreting privacy laws as requiring protection of IMEI numbers. Not using IMEI/IMSI tracking and blocking is against the concept of Due Diligence, as per ITA-2000." Operators can track down a mobile if the IMEI number is known. The GSM Association hosts a server containing all the IMEI numbers of GSM handsets sold, and divides them into the Black List and White List, the former being the ones the association has been informed of misuse or inactivity. Countries can tap into this database and check with their existing database of call records if such Black listed handsets are in use in their circles. The International Mobile Equipment Identity is a unique 15-digit number to your handset. CDMA phones have an 8-digit Electronic Serial Number. The mobile is registered with the service provider's network at this number, and it can be traced every time you make a phone call from the handset.

Tracking the mobile can be done using information about the tower's location where it was last seen and zeroing in on the handset with its IMEI, which would give them a unique target. The operator can then block the mobile across its GSM network. However, the ability to disable the handset if it uses another SIM card is not yet possible. Australia and a few other European countries have enabled this blocking, by having a centralized database for the country, with all operators joining hands to fight mobile theft. However, in a country as huge as India, a central database of all mobile IMEI numbers, called the equipment identity register, is near to impossible, say industry experts. Some cellular operators offer the service for high-profile businessmen, NRIs and on police order (to track down terrorists and gangsters). The layman, however, will have to wait a while before the service is offered to them. Australia and the UK offer this service for free.

4. The 'Hot spots' : On an average, about 150 mobile phone instruments are either stolen or snatched or lost in the Chennai Metropolitan Police area. Were you aware that in any given year, 2 per cent of wireless phones are reported lost, stolen, or damaged? According to a Spice employee, the operator receives around 500 police complaints a day in Bangalore alone. According to Mumbai's Western and Central Railway police records, of the 669 complaints of mobile thefts registered last year, the highest incidences had taken place in suburban railway stations. Other spots where mobile theft is common are cars, theatres, bus stands, homes and offices.

With people increasingly depending on mobiles as a lifeline, one simple precaution to ensure the thief does not access your critical data is to have password locks wherever possible. Also, all buyers of second-hand mobiles should demand details of previous ownership.

4. Living-in-relations, staying together before marriage. ( composed by : Siba Ram Baral )
Yes, friends…. I am talking about something which is happening at your next door. A common scene around that has triggered an early warning to a possible massive cultural disaster. To start discussing on this let's find out if our history and tradition says something similar.
ACOUSTIC NERVE : "Ghotul", a system followed by tribal people of interior Maharastra and MP in which marriageable boys and girls stay together for a few days in specially constructed thatched huts and select their partners after gaining familiarity and confidence is still in vogue among tribal.

Our constitution says : Staying together before marriage : bigamy a non-cognizable offence.

When I meet youngsters belonging to the middle class, related to my friends or from neighborhood, I find these shy children still blush with the name of love itself. They are trapped in the struggle of resolving career-oriented problems on the one hand and are in a blind race of adopting the western lifestyle. They are keen to adopt card culture and fast food trend, while love is still a romantic dream for them. Trapped in traditional disparities these youngsters seem to shy from physical relationship. But when I go through the personal columns and discussion boards in the magazines, I find most of their talks revolving around issues of premarital physical relation, their physical involvements and their confusions arising thereof. The newspapers are full of such love messages, in the chat room of Internet cafés these youngsters appear to be very bold.

I get perplexed with the projection of this double standard of this new young Indian lot. What is the truth? They might have indulged in the physical relations out of natural curiosity but their Indian cultural norms must also lead to conflict within their minds. These premarital relations give rise to the problem of mental distress. Because our Indian traditions emphasize that physical relation and physical relation should be with only the one you get married. All love affairs are not successful : some are sacrificed due to circumstances and societal pressures while fade with the passage of time. In these cases, if there has been physical involvement, then these Indian youngsters cannot embezzle it, and their traditional views do not allow them to accept it. This remains alive in their life and revives like an ulcer in their personality.

In India , the large percentage of boys and girls belonging to middle class families of small towns are still ignorant of physical relations till they get married. This is also a negative approach. One class of these youngsters wants to be known as progressive, they stay in big cities while enjoying their freedom and independence. These self-dependent young who believe marriage as a burden, are economically independent, they think that they have a clear thought of physical relations, just like a natural desire. For such desires, the girls and boys belonging to this class start staying together under the concept of 'Living-in-relations '. These young persons who don't believe in marriage, in no time, entangle with lot of troubles. These relations do not have any commitments, devotion, and when there is an ego clash with each other, then these relations without any sanctity of society become burden leading to separation and a cause for mental distress.

It has taken some thousand of years for man to evolve from an animal to a civilized human, developing his emotional and societal needs to build relationships for his personal growth and family, how can the act of physical relation sans an emotional security be truly satisfying? Physical relation involves emotional bondage. We see around us married couples really struggle to make their marriage successful because they are committed, while the bond which is without the sanctity of marriage, it is assumed, will definitely be full of problems only.

Finally, these premarital relations may give a short-lived sense of joy through physical relation release or a feeling of independence by rebelling against the traditional values, they do not confer permanency that the institution of marriage does. Premarital physical relations also occur when people cross their marriageable age and are unable to overlook their physical needs. One may argue that for an adult, the physical satisfaction is one's personal affair or an ecstasy arising from the union of two bodies yet the Indian society does not sanctify this argument without the institution of marriage. It is true that this institution, in itself is quite old and needs some change and a considerate attitude. For example the orthodox and tradition bound society must accept love marriages.

At last, these traditions do work and provides security and confidence to children, the traditions, which are inculcated at childhood, parent's awareness and friend's behavior, and these children do not look outside for any prohibited happiness. But extremeness always makes opposite impression, difference among physical relation, keeping them apart becomes a cause of dangerous anxiety. At this stage, the physical relation education, at the right time through the right medium, serves the positive role. With the combination of considerate liberal approach and keeping the traditional values in mind we can restrict such pre-marital physical relations to a certain extent. This requires cooperation of the society, parents, educational institutions, media and even the compatibility of youngsters.

The second issue is the birth of a child arising from premarital physical relation. This is not desired or acceptable even in the tribal society of any part of the world. Even among the animals, before giving birth to their children, both parents bring up the children together, till they become self-dependent. Single motherhood is not only unnatural but suicidal too. Even if the mother is well-versed to rear her children, she cannot provide completeness in the absence of the father. The unmarried mother can't do justice with herself and the child.

With various discussions and debates, these topics will always remain filled with controversies and will be alive forever. Prohibited but lustrous the premarital physical relation may be, it cannot remove the values of the institution of marriage. Though the marriage is an old institution but it has a definite scientific value of stability, physical satisfaction, emotional attachments and feeling of security.

My sincere request to all my friends and youngsters to stay away from such things and better be honest and integrated for some one who waits at some corner of the world to be your partner for next seven lives.
